Albert Ayler (July 13, 1936 – November 25, 1970) was an American avant-garde jazz saxophonist, singer and composer.  Born and raised in Cleveland, Ayler played in high school and r&b bands, joining the US Army after graduation.  After his army discharge, he moved to Los Angeles then Sweden in 1962, where his recording career began with "My Name is Albert Ayler".  Returning to the US, he settled in New York and joined the vibrant avant garde scene.
