Billy May

Billy May

Born in Pittsburgh on November 10th, 1916, composer-arranger-trumpeter Billy May was a practically ubiquitous component of the West Coast recording scene of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.  His arrangements for Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Vic Damone, Bobby Darin, Anita O'Day, Matt Munro and many others were heard on radio, TV, in films and elevators everywhere.  His consummate arranging skill was anchored in his early career in the 1930s and 40s, arranging for Charlie Barnet and Glenn Miller.  When one considers his vast output and significant accomplishments in so many fields, it seems odd that he only won two Grammy Awards... but many of his classic arrangements were still being re-released long after his death in 2004.
