Quentin Jackson

Quentin "Butter" Jackson (January 13, 1909 – October 2, 1976)[2] was an American jazz trombonist. Born in Springfield, Ohio, he started piano lessons with his mother at 6, eventually taking up the violin in high school. Jackson's early career in jazz was founded on eight years of touring with Cab Calloway. He went on to work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, Louie Bellson and Gerald Wilson. He also played with the smaller groups of Kenny Burrell, Shirley Scott and Jimmy Smith, among others. He was a proficient reader and accomplished improviser, able to move effortlessly amongst a variety of contemporary styles. He suffered a fatal heart attack while working in the Broadway pit orchestra of Guys and Dolls.
