Wayne Shorter (August 25, 1933 – March 2, 2023) was an American jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Shorter came to prominence in 1959 playing and writing for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In 1964 he joined the Miles Davis Quintet, and then co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report with Joe Zawinul in 1970. He recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader. Many Shorter compositions have become jazz standards. His music has earned worldwide recognition, critical praise and 12 Grammy Awards. His honours include: honorary Doctorate of Music (Berklee College of Music), Grammy Lifetime Achievement (2014), Guggenhiem Fellowship (2016), Polar Music Award (2017), Kennedy Center Honours (2018).
